It originally came up in another thread, but currently Football Manager seems to lack the excitement of a real-life deadline day.

In real-life, most men sit on their computers/mobile refreshing live transfer feeds every minute. Rumours of players sighted in airports, talk of big-name players making big-money moves, and your star player attracting lots of attention. Clubs putting last minute bids in for players, hoping to get them cheaper due to lack of time. Some clubs paying over the odds due to panic.

In FM? Well, we just press spacebar like it's any other day in our FM worlds. What can, if they should, SI do to make deadline day more exciting?

Personally, I'd like to see, at least, a few enquiries coming in for my up-and-coming prospects to my has-been reserves. Your thoughts?

I agree, in real life Deadline Day is a rush for most clubs, but hardly any transfers happen on Deadline Day in FM, and any that do go through are small, unlike Torres and Carroll in real life.

My current game is in the fifth season, and none of the top 25 transfers (by fee) have been on deadline day. That is a misrepresentation of real life.

I was just thinking about this this other day. There should be a bit more activity going on deadline day that there currently is imo. Although I'm not sure of any features that could add to the experience, really. I already get a lot of interest an my reserves as it is. Things should be more hectic though, for sure.

Actually, thinking back, there was an idea I had. Sometimes when I'm on autopilot, I skip past news items without reading them - I know a lot of people do. One time, I actually missed the news item with regards to the impending deadline the next day. Blissfully unaware, I just continued and read this forum, as I do. I was slightly annoyed when I got back into the game, and had missed the deadline.

A feature could be a popup on screen informing you of the impending deadline. Something like "The January transfer window is due to close tomorrow at 0.00." Might seem a bit nooby, but it could be effective, especially to lazy people like myself.

30 minutes increments for the last 2 hours of the transfer window?

I just want "lesser" to put in some cheeky bids for fringe players, and lower league clubs to put in £0 bids for my 34 year old midfielder who didn't play the year before.

There are more forced breaks on deadline day already. Or at least it was supposed to be introduced a few versions ago although it isn't very noticeable in game.

I was thinking about this last night and actually a real time deadline day isn't that ridiculous If you had the option to skip it at any time during or the day before, so you were given the option to have real time or normal day.

Think about it
  • Like in real life it is easily avoidable to have a busy deadline day by getting all your business sorted beforehand.
  • If you do have a deal you want to push through you can enter 'deadline day mode' This puts game time into real time (or something like the half hour = 2 hours)you make an offer, the club accepts/rejects. You then have to wait for the player to arrive, medicals, contracts etc etc all the DD shit.
  • When your deals are done you leave 'Deadlien day mode' and can control then how quick the remainder of the day go's

The time increments are the only factor, but I think the AI and sometimes ourselves, are a little too clever in the market.

SAF is the pinnacle of it, gets his business done early in and out, yet the AI does that every year. I don't think the entire transfer system is ideal.

Arsenal buy on FM all the time, yet irl they're not like that. Chelsea don't buy enough most of the time and Landon Donovan always moves to the PL, I don't think I've seen him linked here in the past 2-3 seasons.

Deadline day needs a lot more emphasis as do manager's purchasing behaviours. I'd like to see some Drama, such as releasing a press statement about a player in the last day or two and you having a bid rejected, them then turning round on deadline day with a transfer request.

That could work yes, Something simple like a message in your inbox: "Your assistant reminds you that the transfer window shuts at 11PM. Do you wish to stay behind after hours to push through some deals?". Then you have the buttons (like the 'Attend'/'Send Assitant') at the bottom with 'Yes' & 'No'. Yes slows the time down to 30 minute intervals, No stops if you get any offers/enquiries/other interactive mail.

Or even just something as simple as a slider to determine how long you want the day to be, so you'd have hour = hour, 30 minutes = hours etc.

I would not ever "Send Assistant" to transfer deadline day!

There is never one that I would trust with my transfer deals.

I think he just means as a way to say skip it without actually using a skip button

Yeah it was a "in this style" button reference, not actually send the assistant. Fuck me, that'd be asking for trouble!

If the interface is already in the game, then it's easier to code. With the slider, SI will just have excuses not to do it.

The idea behind 30 minute intervals is you can go right up to the deadline. Every 30 minutes the team would reply to you. So with an 60/90 mins to go, you pretty much have one chance to get it right. Pussy foot around with the price and you'll run out of time to negotiate with the player/confirm the deal. Just adds that little more tension to the negotiations.

I'd like to see transfers affect morale. If a top player is sold, like Nasri, other players' morale would drop, and perhaps the board would question the decision to sell such an important player.

Also, if the board felt that players needed to be signed on the final day of the window, they could give additional transfer funds, finances permitting.

I think if for one day, the news screen was completely changed it could be really good.

Like a time-line of news stories;

"Mikel Arteta seen arriving at Arsenal training ground by helicopter, for a medical, after agreeing personal terms with a view to a £10m transfer"
"Oriol Romeu hands in transfer request at Barcelona and has reportedly seen in North London, Arsenal and Tottenham previously linked in bidding war for player"
"Phil Jones viewing the training facilities at Wolves ahead of possible 6-month loan deal."
"Tom Cleverley's agent spotted in Fulham ahead of possible £6m transfer"

Then maybe get a cheeky e-mail or two such as;
"Danny Welbeck's agent claims his client is available for £8.5m and can be in [whatever city] for a medical today."
"[Your Player's Agent] has reportedly offered his client's services to Barcelona if they are willing to part with £45m"

If we had something like that, we'd need a few false stories as well.

There could even be an additional press conference near the end of the day, like Harry Redknapp does.
